A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) is a nation-wide effort led by Habitat for Humanity International to serve low-income homeowners who struggle to maintain the exterior of their homes. ABWK focuses on exterior home repairs such as painting, minor exterior repairs, deck repair, wheelchair ramps, landscaping, and exterior clean-up with groups of volunteers working alongside the homeowner to revitalize a home’s exterior. Applicants are selected based on the ability to pay, need, and willingness to partner and are required to repay the project costs back to Habitat through a no-interest loan. Applicants must own and live in the home which they are applying.
Need: Applicants’ homes must be in need of exterior home repair services but mostly likely will not be able to pay for the upfront cost of these repairs or physically unable to make the repairs.
Ability to pay: Applicants will need to meet annual income guidelines. Since the applicant will repay a small no-interest loan, Habitat will ensure that no family is debt-burdened by the selection decision.
Willingness to partner: Applicants will be required to complete a set number of “Sweat-Equity” hours either related to their project or in the community.
